WHAT IS MOLECULAGEM? (clique aqui para versão em português)
Moleculagem started back in 2005, as a collective of video artists – all of them with a strong background in cinema and video post production – who would rather go against the behavior usually associated with VJ work and create from scratch every single piece of image used on their own VJ sets. After 2 years as residents at the famous trendy techo party ‘Oops!’, in Rio the Janeiro, this simple statement started to set their work apart from the local scene, which resulted in calls for the development of exclusive artistic projects for brands like Puma and Motorola, in outdoor events for thousands of people, like the ‘Puma Street Style, yet in 2005, and the ‘Motorola Motomix’, which took place during the famous international music festival ‘Tim Festival’, in 2006, when big names like Daft Punk and the Beastie Boys were the headliners.
After these experiences in big spaces, a few minor projects and the entry of new members, Moleculagem finally completed its conversion into a multi-disciplinary art collective, which kept developing custom projects, along with its new focus: free artistic expression, exploring the mixing of art, video, music and technology and live performances. This goal was achieved by the following projects, such as the creating of two video poetry videos for the Contemporary Festival at the Oi Futuro Cultural Center, based on the work of the brazillian poets Bruna Beber and Lu Lapan, and by 2007 achievements, like ‘Mi Consuelo’ – an experience with fantastic reality and video dance; ‘Lulu Santos’, synchronized video and music scenograpy content for the brazillian pop artist tour; and still on the same year ‘Aqualume’, when the collective was invited to present one of its works, the ‘Geometric Dance’, projected on an ethereal giant surface created by a fan of water, right in the middle of the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, in Rio de Janeiro.
In the 2008, the crew was invited to develop one of the most interesting projects they’ve been into, so far: ‘Lounge C’. Held in partnership with award-winning designer Jair de Souza, it was conducted during four dates at the Zero Zero club, and a final show at the School of Visual Arts of Rio de Janeiro – an historic mansion located inside the Lage Park. In this project, live performances of classical music quartets were mixed with the performance of DJs, VJs and digital percussion. The unique visual projection was developed and mapped in a 3D model of the actual architect sculpture, to create the interesting visual effects characteristic of this technique.
On the following year of 2009, this inherent mix of art, visual and music was used again in two new major projects: ‘GMS’ and Copa Fest. The first accomplished the creation and implementation of video scenery for the world tour of the famous electronic dutch electronic music duo GMS, where the exclusive content included studio shots of models dancing on virtual scenaries and hi-tech fantastic visuals, developed especifically for each song, and programmed to be always locked in sync with the artists live performance and dynamics. And for Copa Fest, a music festival at the historic Copacabana Palace Hotel, in Rio de Janeiro, the crew developed video scenary and a live performance with video programming for the concerts of artists like João Donato, Paulo Moura and Paulinho Trompete, among others big names of brazillian music.
As a goal for the new decade, Moleculagem started the year of 2010 focused on the creation of immersive and interactive art projects and, above all, independent, enabling the group to develop all elements of his creations and provide the public complete audiovisual experiences. The invitation to create an exclusive piece of art for the ‘Biennial of the Americas’, that took place this year in Denver, Colorado – which resulted in their brand new work, “Fixos-Fluxos” (Fixed-Flow), and also their most recent project, “Colagem Brasilis” (Brazillian Collage), an interactive installation where the viewers are an active part in its constant mutations and currently in the process of raising funds for its realization, are perfect examples of this new ideal.
